We have been hiring, and this is the most common questions that I get.
“Do you pay cash?”
Meaning that if we pay cash and not through PAYE.
Of course paying people in cash is not illegal itself. But paying people in cash off the records and then this person not declaring their income thus not paying their tax or National Insurance is.
I have so far had international students(multiple) asking me if I could pay “off the books”.
International students can only work for 20h/week so they are actively looking for “cash jobs” so that they can earn more.
Another one we often have are people who are on benefits.
They say that if they earn more than X amount their benefits will be cut so they don’t want to take any jobs that will pay them through the PAYE and looking for some cash jobs so that they can keep receiving their benefits.
This is how some “self-employed” cleaners work as well. I have yet to see a “self-employed” cleaner doing their self-assessment and declaring their earnings to HMRC properly as well.
I mean how am I supposed to hire someone if people are looking for cash jobs like this? And how can we compete price wise with these so-called self-employed cleaners charging clients £10/h for cleaning.
So now the question I ask straight away if someone applies for a job is “this is an employed position and we do not have an option to pay cash in hand is that ok? “.
The situation is getting out of control!
Remember, getting paid cash in hand and not declaring it to the HMRC is ILLEGAL!
However, I think that this also weeds some potential problem-causer out as well.
If they are trying to cheat the system and avoid paying their share of tax, then I don’t think they are a good fit for a team-working environment.
We have had people who worked with us and also had a side-gig of doing “self-employed” cleanings. They usually were not a team-player and didn’t work out.
